Okonjo-Iweala Receives Honourary Degree From Oxford University

Oxford University has announced the recipients of its honorary degrees for 2024. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization, is among the six distinguished individuals to be honored.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala GCON, a Nigerian economist, has been serving as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization since March 2021. Notably, she is the first woman and first African to lead the World Trade Organization as Director-General. She also previously sat on the Twitter Board of Directors and stepped down in February 2021 in connection with her appointment as Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

Oknojo-Iweala will receive her honorary degree at the Encaenia ceremony alongside:

  • Warren East, a British engineer and businessperson, and former CEO of Rolls-Royce Holdings
  • Sir Demis Hassabis, a British computer scientist, artificial intelligence researcher, entrepreneur, and co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind
  • Sir Michael Palin, a British actor, comedian, writer, and television presenter, and former member of the Monty Python comedy group
  • Anoushka Shankar, a British-Indian-American musician, sitarist, composer, producer, and daughter of the legendary Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar
  • Professor Salim Yusuf, a Canadian cardiologist and epidemiologist, and Executive Director of the Population Health Research Institute, Canada

The honorary degrees recognize the outstanding contributions of these individuals in their respective fields, and Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s achievement is a testament to her dedication and leadership in economics and international trade.

The Encaenia ceremony ticket registration will open on April 29 for staff, students, alumni, and academic visitors. Unfortunately, tickets are not available to the general public.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s honorary degree from Oxford University is a well-deserved recognition of her tireless efforts to promote economic development and cooperation globally. The other honorees have also made significant contributions in their respective fields, and their recognition is a testament to Oxford University’s commitment to excellence and innovation.
