The Mount Patti

Mount Patti is one of the finest and most interesting tourist sites in Lokoja, the capital city of Kogi State, Nigeria. It is interesting to know that Lokoja is the first administrative capital of modern-day Nigeria. The name “Mount Patti” was formed from “Mountain” and “Patti.” “Patti,” which means hill in Nupe language, was given to the place due to the strong presence of the Nupe community.
Visible from anywhere in town, the lush green hill is about 458.3 meters high. It has been in existence for thousands of years and has been inhabited by many ethnic communities in Nigeria. According to history, the area was previously a centre for various trade activities.
Touring Mount Patti
Often, tourists look forward to three major exciting attractions when touring Mount Patti. These are unmissable sights that make up the most fascinating experience for nature lovers. One is the famous baobab tree, Lord Lugard’s rest house, and the confluence.

Baobab Tree
This tree has been on Mount Patti for centuries. It is believed to possess certain mythical values. Its seed, bark and leaves for instance are used by locals around the community to cure some ailments. The excitement for tourists is that they get to inscribe their names on it as evidence of having climbed the mountain.
Lord Lugard’s Rest House
Built to appreciate Mount Patti’s awesomeness, Lord Lugard & Flora’s rest house is today, a mini-museum of colonial significance. In front of the house is a statue of the couple standing together. Flora, with a bag in hand and Lugard, with hands in front. The statue was built in 1950.
The Confluence
The spectacular view from the top of Mount Patti is usually an anticipated sight. Just six kilometres away from the mountain is the River Niger and Benue. How these two rivers meet in a colourful Y-shape remains one of Nigeria’s most beautiful natural wonders. It is interesting to know that the River Niger is Africa’s third-largest and major river in Western Africa. It is over 4180 km long and passes through Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Benin. The River Benue on the other hand is 1,400 km long and an offshoot of the Niger River.
There is also the forest view of the mountain, its green vegetation and cooling climate.
Significant for its elevated view of towns, distinctive natural features, and its part in Nigeria’s history, tourists are drawn yearly to Mount Patti, to enjoy its natural and historical brilliance. Nature enthusiasts can decide to go on a magical adventure to appreciate its magnificence any time of the year.
