Facebook Launches Marketplace in Nigeria to Boost Buying and Selling

Facebook has launched its Marketplace initiative in Nigeria. Marketplace, a new platform where users can buy and sell new and pre-owned items to other users was initially created in 2016. On this platform, users can list their products and connect directly with potential customers around them, instead of buying and selling through Facebook groups.

Although already active in other African countries, the Marketplace service was made available in Nigeria on the 3rd of February 2021.

Commenting on the new development, Facebook’s Head of Public Policy for Anglophone, West Africa, Adaora Ikenze said that the launch of Marketplace in Nigeria will provide convenience for people to discover new products, shop for items they want or find buyers for things they intend to sell. The launch further highlights Facebook’s ongoing efforts to help boost buying and selling in Nigeria and connecting communities.

With a gentle tap on the Marketplace icon on Facebook, or by simply visiting www.facebook.com/marketplace, users can start using the platform to browse and search for items based on distance or category. Users can list an item and then create a public listing group that will appear on people’s newsfeed, Facebook search, Marketplace or Facebook groups.

The items sold on this platform must follow the Community Standards as well as the Commerce Policies. Sellers with various businesses are to comply with all applicable laws and regulations guiding the Marketplace. Buyers are further encouraged by Facebook to always verify their items before completing shipping arrangements. Also, to ensure safety, meeting arrangements should be done in public places.

The Launch of Facebook Marketplace will, however, continue to impact lives and businesses with the boost of sales in connecting societies. It will further provide convenience and trust as people can now buy and sell anything from the comfort of their homes, offices or wherever they are.

Since founding in 2016, Facebook Marketplace has grown to serve over 800 million people from across 70 different countries on a monthly basis. The Marketplace is a convenient destination for people to discover, buy and sell items. Users can find what they intend to buy simply by filtering their results by location, category and price.

People and brands may list items in the following categories: Classifieds, Clothing and Accessories, Deals, Electronics, Entertainment, Family, Hobbies, Home and Garden, Housing, and Vehicles. However, shoppers can choose to view certain categories, all categories or just search for a particular product.
