The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has taken a groundbreaking step in revolutionising tertiary education in Nigeria by introducing a pioneering programme: Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Business Incubation Certification (EIBIC). This innovative programme makes UNILAG the first Nigerian university to offer students the opportunity to earn two honours or degrees simultaneously.

The EIBIC programme, approved by the UNILAG Senate, is designed to bridge socioeconomic gaps in Nigeria and prepare students for the future job market. According to Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Development Services, the programme aims to equip students with dual capacities, enhancing their employability and entrepreneurial skills.

“The EIBIC programme is a response to the changing needs of the Nigerian economy and the global job market,” Professor Atsenuwa explained. “We recognise that entrepreneurship is crucial for economic growth, and we want to empower our students with the skills and knowledge to succeed in this area.”

The programme, starting with 100-level students, will offer a comprehensive curriculum combining academic rigour and practical experience. Students will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including business incubation hubs and innovation labs, where they can develop and launch their startups.

Professor Sunday Adebisi, the Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Centre Director, emphasised the programme’s uniqueness. “The EIBIC programme is not just about earning two degrees; it’s about developing a mindset of innovation and entrepreneurship. Our students will learn to identify opportunities, develop business plans, and pitch their ideas to investors.”

Graduating students will receive EIBIC certificates and their respective degree certificates, demonstrating their expertise in entrepreneurship and innovation. The programme’s calendar has been designed to ensure students complete both programmes before graduation, making them highly attractive to potential employers.
