Isiagu is a vibrant and colorful attire traditionally worn by the Igbo men of the south eastern part of Nigeria when receiving a chieftaincy title. In fact, the Isiagu apparel is also known as Chieftaincy.
According to some historic accounts, the attire is given to a newly titled chief during the chieftaincy occasion. Isiagu means Lion Head when translated to the English Language. This is in reference to the lion shapes and designs on the attire. This outfit distinguished titled men from others in the society.
The Isiagu, a unique pull over shirt is made of high-quality suede material. The attire can be worn as a complete regalia or as a shirt with matching trousers. The outfit customarily has a breast pocket and some outfits are made with gold buttons that are linked by a chain. Occasionally, the outfit is complemented with a ceremonial hat. The attire is prestigious and classy.
Recently, this popular traditional wear has experienced a global renaissance and the attire is now worn by people all over the world including women who have also adopted the lovely Isiagu fabrics.
