Abiola Fashina Recognised as ISN’s First Medical Laboratory Scientist of the Year
Abiola Fashina, a Medical Laboratory Scientist from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Medical Centre has won the sum of ₦ 1million cash prize, a capacity development training and a donation of medical laboratory equipment as he emerged winner of the first edition of the ISN Medical Laboratory Scientist of the year award. Abiola was named the winner among the 10 finalists shortlisted at the grand finale which took place at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Anayo Chidobu, another medical laboratory scientist with El-Lab Laboratories, Lagos emerged first runner-up, clinching the sum of ₦750,00 and a capacity development training opportunity while the 2nd runner-up, Yahaya Usman from Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria was awarded a cash prize of ₦500,000 and a capacity development training opportunity as well. However, the other 7 finalists were rewarded with a cash price of ₦200,000 each.

The ISN Laboratory Scientists’ award recognizes unsung heroes in the medical laboratory space across Nigeria. The award also aims to provide medical scientists with maximum peace of mind by improving the confidence of patients in the health sector. The award further encourages laboratory scientists who have played vital roles in the medical field.
The award is organized by the ISN Products Nigeria Limited, a healthcare-focused company and a leading supplier of medical diagnostic products and services in Nigeria.
ISN recognizes the important role played by medical scientists and the need for proper management through accurate diagnosis, hence the start of the award.
Representing the Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, the Chief Executive Officer of Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, Dr Adedamola Dada described all medical scientists as important components of every health system. He further applauded the diagnosis of Covid-19 to medical scientists all over the world.
Chairman of the panel of judges, Elochukwu Adibo said that the award would encourage medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria and enable them to dedicate more time and efforts to excellence and conformity to laboratory quality management systems (QMS), in line with international standards – ISO 15189:2012.
