Nigerians have joined the rest of the world in celebrating with the Super Falcons’ star following her latest achievement. 

Asisat Oshoala’s Club Barcelona, is now the first Spanish side to win the women’s Champions League with an impressive performance to defeat Chelsea 4-0 in Gothenburg on Sunday. The Nigerian superstar was two years ago a losing finalist but now on the winning side since Sunday’s match.

Barcelona was declared 2021 UEFA Women Champions League winner after the Spanish side thrashed Chelsea 4-0 in the final played at the Gamla Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden. This is the club’s first-ever feat in the competition.

After recently recovering from an injury, Asisat Oshoala was a second-half substitute in a game where some flaws have been recorded in the first-half.

Goals scored by Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati, Melanie Leupolz and Caroline Graham Hansen confirmed the Spanish champion’s superiority before the break. Although Oshoala found the back of the net, her effort was ruled out for offside.

Regardless, she becomes the first Nigerian and African woman to lift female football’s biggest club trophy. The four-time African women player of the year was close to winning the UEFAWCL two years ago until Lyon handed Barcelona a 4-1 thrashing at the Groupama Arena in Budapest.

It is a remarkable victory for the Super Falcons striker who has contributed greatly to Barcelona’s victory including scoring four goals in eight matches. Oshoala scored in the club’s 4-1 triumph at PSV and her side’s 5-0 feat against Fortuna Hjorring in the earlier rounds of the competition. Oshoala then scored a goal each in both legs of her side’s quarter-final triumph over Manchester City. 

Recently, she helped the club retain the league title with her 15 goals crucial to the champions navigating the campaign with a perfect win record.

The Nigerian superstar has now added the Champions League trophy to the two league titles, the Copa de la Reina, the Supercopa Femenina and the two Catalunya Femenina cups she won during her successful three-year stay in Spain.

The 26-year old is a recipient of the Aiteo CAF Best Player Award in 2017 (female category), BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year 2015 and the African Women’s Footballer of the Year 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2019 amongst others.
