FG Applauds Mo Abudu on Partnership with Netflix

The Federal Government of Nigeria recently commended media entrepreneur and filmmaker Mo Abudu on her partnership with leading global streaming service Netflix to create two original Nigerian screen content. Mo Abudu is an award winning producer and the owner of Africa’s first global Black Media, lifestyle and entertainment network, EbonyLife, known for award-winning shows like Moments with Mo, hit movies like Wedding Party 1&2, Chief Daddy, and the Royal Hibiscus hotel including others.

Mo Abudu continues to accelerate and soar as a film maker extraordinaire. She is indeed an inspiration and embodies the definition of hard work and commitment to one’s craft. This new partnership will witness the on-screen adaptation of literary works by two outstanding and creative Nigerian authors, Lola Shoneyin and Wole Soyinka. The literary works to be adapted are,” The secret lives of Baba Segi’s Wives” by Lola Shoneyin and “Death and the King’s Horseman” by Wole Soyinka.

In a statement released on Friday June 12, Netflix’s lead for original series in Africa, Dorothy Ghettuba, revealed that, Mo Abudu’s passion for creating high-quality, and riveting multi-genre films, played a significant role in facilitating Netflix partnership and investment in the Nigerian creative sector.

“Mo is at the forefront of creative storytelling in African television. Her passion for creating high-quality, riveting multi-genre films and TV shows that capture the imagination while showcasing the diversity and richness of Nigerian culture is evident in her impressive body of work, she stated”.

Mo Abudu responded that the partnership with Netflix would be greatly rewarding to Nigerian and African creative sector.“It is truly time to tell our stories and I am super pleased that we have an opportunity to do this now in partnership with the world’s leading internet entertainment service, she stated.

Wole Soyinka in a statement said “In a creative industry which, even in pioneering countries, is so male-dominated, it is always a delight to see robust challenges offered by the female gender, and of attestable quality. Mo Abudu’s incursion into this arena as film and television producer has been especially stimulating”.

Netflix is a global leading internet entertainment service provider with over 183 million paid memberships in over 190 countries viewing television series, documentaries and feature films across a wide variety of genres and languages. Therefore, this partnership is unarguably a huge feat for the Nigerian creative industry.
