Growing up in Kaduna, Nigeria, Jelani Aliyu’s childhood was infused with a love for drawing and an innate curiosity about the world around him. Born on September 8, 1966, Jelani was the fifth of seven children in the Aliyu family, hailing from Dogon-daji in Sokoto State.
His educational journey took him to Sokoto Capital School and later to Federal Government College Sokoto, where his talent in Technical Drawing earned him recognition as the best-graduating student.
Jelani had always dreamt of becoming a car designer. So, he set out on a journey of self-discovery and determination. Initially, he studied Architecture at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. However, he soon realised that his passion lay elsewhere. He pursued an associate degree in Architecture at the Federal Polytechnic Birnin Kebbi. Here, he worked hard and showed great dedication towards his goal. His innovative spirit and hard work earned him the title of Best All-Round Student.

In 1990, Jelani’s journey took a transformative turn when the Sokoto State Scholarship board awarded him a scholarship to study automotive design at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, United States. In 1994, armed with his newfound qualifications and a passion for design, Jelani Aliyu joined the esteemed ranks of General Motors (GM). His tenure at GM marked the beginning of a remarkable career in automotive design, during which he left an indelible mark on the industry.
