Nigerian-born American attorney and senior economic adviser during the Obama administration, Adewale Wally Adeyemo has been nominated by the United States President-elect, Joe Biden to serve as the US Deputy Treasury Secretary.

Adewale holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School.

Since his career journey, Adewale has served in organizations across the private, public, and not-for profit sectors focused on promoting public policy and leading several economic activities. 

Appointed as senior international economic advisor to Obama in 2015, Adewale served as Deputy National Security Advisor from 2015 to 2016 and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council. There, he took up responsibilities in the policymaking process of the country on areas of trade and investment, energy and certain environmental issues. He also served as Obama’s representative to the G7 and G20.

Adewale Adeyemo further worked as Chief Negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership at the US Department of Treasury. He has broken several records in his career, including being the first Chief of Staff to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under Elizabeth Warren, a senior US Senator from Massachusetts. As Chief of Staff, he hired the Bureau’s first executive leadership team and developed an agency dedicated to protecting the US consumers. 

Adewale is currently the first president of the Obama Foundation, a position he assumed on the 1st of August, 2019. As President of the Obama Foundation, he advises on business strategy, macroeconomic policy and geopolitics to the CSIS Economics Program. He also advises policymakers, business leaders, and nonprofit organisations on issues bothering around economic development, trade and investments as well as introduce strategies to address economic inequality. Prior to this role, he worked as Editor at the Hamilton Project and further served as the Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff to Jack Lew in the United States Department of Treasury.

On the Biden-Harris presidential transition website Adewale was described as,

“A leader with deep experience across both the economic and national security space and has served as a trusted adviser to the country’s foremost policymakers in times of crisis.”

For his immense contribution to leadership and economic policy, Adewale sits on the board of several organizations like the Aspen Strategy Group, the board of Demos and the Golden State Opportunity Foundation.
