Nigerian startups 54gene, Kobo360 and ComX were among the 12 winners of the AppsAfrica Innovation award this year, winning the Disruptive Innovation Award, Agri & FoodTech Award as well as the Mobility Award categories. Every year, the AppsAfrica Innovation Awards strives to showcase leading ventures from across the African continent. Winners this year are from Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda.

The 2020 AppsAfrica Innovation Awards, attracted over 500 submissions from 51 countries from which the final 12 were selected. The awards are open to corporates, established ventures or start-ups who have launched services in at least one African market.

Now in their sixth year, the AppsAfrica Innovation Awards 2020, celebrates technology and mobile applications from across Africa, showcasing the continent’s best innovations across 12 categories.

54 gene founded by Abasi Ene-Obong in 2019, is an African genomics research, services and development company addressing the need to include under-represented African genomic data in research which could lead to medical breakthroughs and new healthcare solutions worldwide. The biotech startup offers genetic testing and molecular diagnostics services to Africans. Prior to being one of the AppsAfrica Innovation Awards 2020, the company recently raised $15 million through a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-backed venture fund in 2020 and has been recognized by Fast Company recently as one of the most innovative companies in Africa.

Kobo360 founded by Obi Ozor and Ife Oyedele is a logistics company that connects truck drivers with companies that need their services. Kobo360 provides its services to businesses that need to move items within Nigeria and outside the country.
