68-Year-Old Woman Delivered of Twins at Lagos University Teaching Hospital
A 68-year-old woman was recently delivered of a set of twins, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
In a statement signed by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Council of LUTH, Professor Wasiu Adeyemo stated that the woman was pregnant for the first time after undergoing In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). In Vitro Fertilisation is a process of fertilisation where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body – in vitro. The process involves monitoring and stimulating a woman’s ovulatory process, removing an ovum or ova from the woman’s ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a liquid in a laboratory.
In this instance, the IVF and embryo transfer were performed at a facility outside of LUTH. The new and excited mother was referred to LUTH at early gestation and was subsequently managed till she was delivered. She was delivered on April 14 through an elective Caesarean section, at 37 weeks gestation. According to official reports, mother and babies are doing well.
