Burna Boy, Asake, Buju and others win big at the 2023 Soundcity MVP Awards
The much-anticipated Soundcity MVP Awards presented the 2023 edition of the international music festival on Saturday night. The Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, Nigeria, hosted the Tingo-powered award event.
Gyakie, Arya Starr, Bad Boy Timz, Seyi Vibez, Ruger, and Black Sherif were just a few of the African artists who performed at the event hosted by South African actress Pearl Thusi.
The nominees for the Soundcity MVP Awards 2023 were Tems, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Black Sherif, Costa Titch, Ruger, Asake, Nasty C, Uncle Waffles, and others. The greatest beneficiaries are Ruger, Tems, Oxlade, Ajebo Hustlers, and other companies.
One of the show’s highlights was a memorial to departed musicians and their loved ones, including Sound Sultan, Ifeanyi Adeleke (Davido’s Son), Rico Swavey, Obama DMW, and others.
A surprise appearance was also made by the Shanty Town principal actors, Chidi Mokeme, Ini Edo, and Mercy Eke. The crowd couldn’t stop laughing as they imitated Scar, Inem, and Jackie – their roles.

12 of the 15 musical categories were won by Nigerian performers, including Asake, Fireboy DML, Ruger, and others. Ruger won the award for Best New Artist, and “Ku Lo Sa” by Oxlade won the Listeners’ Choice prize.
Buga by Kizz Daniel was named “Song of the Year.” While Tems added to her collection of victories in a year, Asake was named the new male MVP. Burna Boy’s victory as the African artist of the year solidified his position as the top African artist, and Rema received the award for best digital artist of the year.
With their song “Finesse,” Pheelz and Buju won the Best Collaboration award. Ajebo Hustlers got the Best Duo award. Magixsticks, a music producer, got the Best Producer prize for “Organise.” At the same time, TG Omori, a video director, won the Video of the Year prize for the music video “Fireboy and Asake – Bandana.” Both individuals received honours for their brilliant innovation. For his remix of “Peru” with Ed Sheeran, Fireboy was also named the Best Pop winner.
