In a world where complex medical jargon and inaccessible healthcare dominate, one man has stepped forward to transform health education into a relatable, engaging, and impactful mission. Dr. Chinonso Egemba, better known as Aproko Doctor, has become a household name by blending storytelling, humor, and compassion to bring health information to the forefront of public consciousness. His innovative approach has turned medical education into an engaging, life-saving mission.
The Making of a Health Crusader
Born on October 26, 1990, Egemba’s journey into health advocacy was deeply influenced by personal and societal experiences. Raised in Lagos by hardworking parents—his father, a car dealer, and his mother, a street food vendor—Egemba saw the stark realities of life for many Nigerians. These early experiences shaped his determination to make healthcare knowledge accessible to all.
His desire to become a doctor took root early in life. However, it was solidified during his time at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. While still a medical student, Egemba and his peers helped diagnose a stroke patient, a moment that brought him early recognition. However, when that same patient passed away two years later due to a second stroke, it had a profound effect on Egemba. This tragedy made him question how many lives could be saved through better awareness and preventive care.
By the time he graduated in 2015, Egemba had decided on a path less traveled. Instead of pursuing the prestige of traditional medical practice, he ventured into the world of public health advocacy, determined to educate everyday Nigerians on how to take charge of their health.

The Birth of Aproko Doctor
In 2017, Egemba launched the Aproko Doctor initiative. The name, derived from the Nigerian slang for “busybody,” was intentional. It signified his desire to intrude (albeit in a helpful way) into people’s health decisions. Starting as a Twitter handle, Aproko Doctor quickly gained traction for engaging and relatable content.
“I wanted my messages to be simple enough that anyone could understand,” Egemba explained in an interview. “Using medical jargon would only alienate the people I was trying to help.”
Armed with humor, memes, skits, and stories, Egemba turned complex medical topics into digestible lessons. His hashtags—#DrinkWater, #EatAFruit, and #MoveYourBody—became rallying cries for better health rooted in his personal experiences.
“When I started, I worked three jobs in Lagos and lived out of a backpack. I was stressed, hypertensive, and surviving on soft drinks,” he recounted. His journey to healthier living began with small, consistent changes like drinking more water and eating fruits—advice he now shares with millions.
Health Information as a Lifeline
Egemba’s impact extends far beyond catchy social media posts. He believes that healthcare is not just about surviving but thriving and that knowledge is the first step toward empowerment.
“Nigeria has some of the worst health indices globally,” Egemba says. “Many of these issues are tied to lifestyle and ignorance, which is why I focus on educating people about preventive care.”
By simplifying healthcare topics, Aproko Doctor has inspired Nigerians to prioritize their well-being. Social researcher Agbeja Ifedapo shared how Egemba’s posts have influenced everyday decisions. She said, “I was misusing antibiotics, but I stopped because Aproko Doctor explained the dangers in a way I could relate to.”
The 100K Club: A Lifeline for the Needy
In 2020, Egemba took his advocacy a step further by founding the 100K Club, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to those in need. The initiative has raised millions of naira to fund surgeries, treatments, and prosthetics for Nigerians who cannot afford healthcare.
During the #EndSARS protests, the 100K Club became a lifeline for victims of police brutality. One of its most heartwarming stories is that of Jane Obiene, a young woman who received a prosthetic leg after Egemba’s tweet raised over ₦3 million in just four hours.
“Imagine being able to walk confidently again after years of discomfort,” Obiene said. “Aproko Doctor gave me that gift.”
Turning Challenges Into Opportunities
Egemba’s journey has not been without challenges. As an unconventional doctor who embraced social media to share health tips, he faced criticism from peers who labeled him the “Google Doctor” or accused him of demeaning the medical profession.
But Egemba remained undeterred. Over time, many of his critics came around, recognizing the impact of his work. “Some of my colleagues now see the value in what I do. They’ve even started sharing health information on their platforms,” he said.
His personal health battles also shaped his approach. In December 2022, Egemba was diagnosed with a brain tumor (Craniopharyngioma), which temporarily left him blind in one eye. He underwent surgery and has since used his experience to highlight the importance of early detection and regular check-ups.

Expanding Horizons: The Aproko Doctor Academy
In addition to his advocacy work, Egemba launched the Aproko Doctor Academy, a mentorship program to develop the next generation of health storytellers. Through training and collaborations, the academy equips participants with the tools to create impactful health content, bridging the gap between medical knowledge and public understanding.
“Health information should be a lifeline, not a privilege,” Egemba insists. “By mentoring others, we’re creating a ripple effect that will save even more lives.”
Healthcare in Every Home
Egemba’s vision for the future is clear: to make healthcare accessible and relatable for all. He believes telemedicine holds the key to addressing Nigeria’s healthcare challenges, especially in rural areas where access to hospitals and specialists is limited.
“Being able to connect patients in remote areas with medical experts is transformative,” Egemba said.
Through partnerships with healthcare organizations, individuals, and traditional media, Egemba continues to push the boundaries of health education. His role in the Netflix film “Strain,” which raises awareness about sickle cell disease, is just one example of how he uses diverse platforms to spread his message.
A Legacy of Impact
From a young boy whose family struggled with hospital bills to a doctor revolutionizing healthcare education, Egemba’s journey is one of resilience, passion, and purpose. Through Aproko Doctor, he has saved lives, debunked myths, and empowered millions to take charge of their health.
“My goal is to create a healthier society where people thrive, not just survive,” he says. As Egemba continues to weave health into the fabric of everyday life, his story reminds us all that knowledge is power—and when shared, it becomes a lifeline.
