Dr Oluyinka O. Olutoye is a world-renowned fetal and pediatric surgeon whose work hit the internet when he led a team of medical practitioners to perform surgery on a baby in utero at Texas Children’s hospital in the United States. Dr Oluyinka Olutoye and his team which comprised of 21 doctors successfully removed a sacrococcygeal teratoma, a large tumour that grows on the tailbone of a fetus, and returned the 23-week-old to the mother’s womb.

Dr Olutoye is currently a Surgeon-In-Chief at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the United States where he advances the success of the surgical services to help children around the world. He is also a professor and the E. Thomas Boles chair of pediatric surgery at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine where he serves as the primary surgical liaison between Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the OSU College of Medicine.

Before Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Dr Olutoye served as co-director of the Fetal Center and president of the medical staff at Texas Children’s Hospital. At Baylor College of Medicine, also in Houston, Texas, he was a tenured Professor of Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Pediatrics, and chair of the Faculty Senate.

As well as his clinical expertise, Dr Olutoye leads an established research program focused on the role of the inflammatory response in scarless fetal wound healing, in-utero correction of severe congenital malformations, and the early detection of necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants.

Dr Olutoye obtained his medical degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, in 1988 and a PhD in anatomy from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, in 1996. He went on to complete his residency in general surgery at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, Virginia Commonwealth University, and his fellowship in pediatric surgery at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

The Doctor’s interest spans Pediatric Surgery, General Surgery, Fetal Intervention, Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Clinical Research. 

Dr Olutoye is a member of the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society, a Fellow of the Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons.
