Dr Philip Ozuah

Dr Philip Ozuah is the Chief Executive Officer of Montefiore Medicine in NewYork, the lead organization for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Montefiore Health System’s 13-member hospitals, 300 ambulatory sites, and 7.5 million annual patients encounter. Dr Philip Ozuah also leads the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, one of the premier centers for research, medical education, and clinical investigation. 

A National Institutes of Health (NIH)–funded researcher and award-winning educator, Dr Philip Ozuah has served as Professor and University Chairman of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and was also Physician-in-Chief of Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. He became president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Montefiore Medicine in 2019 after 34 years of service as a medical practitioner.  Before then, he joined Montefiore in 1989 where he worked to deliver best-in-class clinical care with a commitment to healthcare access for the underserved. Under his leadership, MHS’s medical specialties were ranked in the top 1% of the nation’s hospitals and as one of the best hospitals.

Dr Philip earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, a master’s degree in education from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and administration from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at Einstein and Montefiore, and his postdoctoral fellowship in medical education at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, Los Angeles.

Dr Philip recently donated $ 1 million to the College of Medicine, the University of Ibadan for construction and infrastructural repairs on the note that the college helped shape and refine him.

In the past years, Dr Philip’s astounding work in the medical space and impressive record of success has earned him multiple accolades. He possesses a strong commitment to medical education as well as deep academic medical research expertise, including as a professor and the university chair of pediatrics at Einstein.

Through his works, he has expanded access for underserved communities, recruited and cultivated outstanding talent, advanced programs of excellence, fostered innovations in medical education, and improved financial and operational performance by integrating care across a rapidly growing and evolving system that sees more than 6 million patient interactions a year.

Dr Philip has been recognized internationally for excellence in teaching and patient care, including as an inductee into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and a two-time recipient of the Academic Pediatric Association’s prestigious Helfer Award for Innovation in Medical Education. He was also recognized by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the Top 25 COOs in Healthcare, 2018.
