Dr Uchechi Iweala
Dr Uchechi Iweala is a fellowship-trained Orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in spine surgery. Dr Uchechi Iweala recently achieved a new feat in the United State’s medical space when he became one of the first spinal surgeons in Maryland to successfully perform a navigated lumbar spinal fusion using a robot.
Dr Iweala grew up in Maryland and attended St. Albans in Washington DC. He earned his bachelor’s degree with honours at Harvard College and received his MD/MBA from Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School, Boston, MA. Dr Iweala completed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at George Washington University in 2019 and a fellowship in spine surgery at New York University in 2020.
A son of the World Trade Organisation’s Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Dr Iweala is currently an Associate Partner at the Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics (CAO).
The doctor has published numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed academic papers in the International Journal of Spine Surgery and the Journal of Orthopaedics. Dr Iweala’s research interests include minimizing re-operation after spinal fusion, limiting the use of narcotics in spine surgery, and maximizing the efficiency and value of care for spine surgery patients.
With a passion for meeting surgical needs around the world, Dr Iweala has worked on various health projects in Ghana and South Africa. He recently co-founded Capital Health Surgical Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, alongside his father, Dr Ikemba Iweala, a trained Neurosurgeon. Capital Health Surgical Centre (CHSC) wants to change the current reality of the Nigerian medical space by providing the highest quality surgical care in the country and West Africa. CHSC employs nurses and physicians who have trained at world-renowned health institutions and partners with these same institutions to provide specialized care.
Dr Iweala is a member of Lumbar Spine Research Society, the North American Spine Society, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
