Elizabeth Ayanacho Wins Gold at Beirut Taekwondo Open, Ahead of Tokyo Olympics

Elizabeth Ayanacho, Nigeria’s taekwondo athlete has defeated Denmark’s Andersen Jesmin in the final competition of the female – 67kg World Taekwondo G-2 Beirut Open to win gold. She previously defeated Uzbekistan’s Alijonova Gulsanam 22 – 16, in a tough semi-final bout to get to the final stage.

Ayanacho said,

“I am happy to improve every day. I learnt a lot about myself in the ring, as I kept trying new things and a different attitude. I learnt even more from my more experienced opponents. I had to give everything, so, I thank them for helping me develop even more.”

“My performance at this event increased my confidence ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. It is a very difficult challenge but we will keep pushing towards the target,” she further said.

This win follows the silver the 22-year-old, Olympics-bound Taekwondo athlete won recently in June, at the African Taekwondo Championships held in Dakar, Senegal; as she improves her preparations for the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics.

Ayanacho had participated in the 2019 African Games, where she won a bronze medal at 67kg and further won the 2019 Nigeria Open in Abuja, where she defeated Judith Usifoh. In August 2020, Ayanacho was featured in the Malala Fund “Game Changers” project, a series featuring 30 female athletes worldwide. She also qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo.
