Eniola Mariam Bolaji Makes History as First African to Win Para-Badminton Medal

Eniola Mariam Bolaji has made history by becoming the first African athlete to win a medal in Para-Badminton at the Paralympic Games. The Nigerian athlete secured a bronze medal in the women’s singles SL3 category at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyna in a dominant performance, winning 2-0 (21-9, 21-9).

This victory is monumental for Nigeria and Africa. It marks not only Nigeria’s first medal at the Paris Paralympics but also the first time any African athlete has medaled in badminton at either the Paralympics or the Olympics. Bolaji’s success is a historic moment in sports, breaking new ground for the continent in a sport that athletes from other regions have traditionally dominated.

A Journey of Determination and Inspiration

Born in Ibadan, Nigeria, and raised in Ilorin, Bolaji’s journey to Paralympic success has been anything but ordinary. Originally a tennis player, she switched to Para-Badminton after being inspired and guided by her late coach, Bello Oyebanji. Oyebanji, a well-respected figure in Nigerian sports, saw potential in Bolaji and encouraged her to pursue Para-Badminton, believing she could significantly impact the sport.

Bolaji’s decision to transition from tennis to Para-Badminton was not easy, but it proved to be the right move. Under Oyebanji’s mentorship, she honed her skills and developed the discipline and determination required to excel at the highest levels of competition. Tragically, Oyebanji passed away in an accident before he could witness Bolaji’s success on the world stage.

Bolaji dedicated her Paralympic medal to her late coach, sharing an emotional tribute after her match. “The late Coach was like a father to me, a man of discipline who supported me throughout my journey. He inspired me to take up Para-Badminton instead of tennis, and I am happy with the results. This medal is for him,” she said.
