Nigeria’s U-20 Women’s national team, the Falconets, began their 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign with a thrilling 1-0 victory over South Korea on Monday morning at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo. In a tense and closely fought encounter, Flourish Sabastine’s late goal sealed all three points for Nigeria, putting them in a strong position to advance from the group stage.
A Battle of Wills in Bogotá
The match was characterized by tight defenses and limited opportunities for both teams. From the outset, it was clear that neither side would give an inch, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances in the opening half.
Coach Christopher Danjuma fielded a strong starting lineup, including standout fullback Rofiat Imuran and Jumoke Alani, who had recently featured in the Super Falcons’ squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Falconets looked solid but were tested by a determined South Korean side.

Tense First Half
In the first half, both teams created few chances as they focused on controlling possession and limiting errors. Nigeria’s Mary Lucky Mkpa posed a constant threat but could not convert her chances into goals. The Falconets’ best opportunity came when Mkpa narrowly missed the target after a promising buildup.
On the defensive side, Nigeria had a scare in the 28th minute when goalkeeper Shukurat Bakare misjudged a cross, allowing the ball to slip past her. Fortunately for Nigeria, the Korean attacker couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity, sending the ball over the crossbar.
South Korea came closest to breaking the deadlock just before halftime when Myeyung’s powerful free-kick from 22 yards out rattled the crossbar, sending a wave of relief through the Nigerian camp. The first half ended goalless, with both teams returning to the locker room knowing they needed more attacking urgency in the second half.
Falconets Dominate the Second Half
Nigeria emerged stronger after the break, with Coach Danjuma urging his team to take the initiative. Rofiat Imuran, a key player in the first half, continued to push forward, trying to set up Mkpa and other attackers. Imuran also had a chance to score from a free-kick, but her effort sailed over the crossbar.
The Falconets made several substitutions as the match progressed to add fresh legs to their attack. In the 66th minute, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu replaced Mkpa, and Goodness Osigwe came on for Amina Bello in the 79th minute. These changes added dynamism to Nigeria’s forward play, and the Falconets started finding more openings in the South Korean defense.
The Decisive Moment
The breakthrough finally came in the 88th minute when Flourish Sabastine produced a moment of magic. Initially intending to cross the ball, her effort turned into a brilliant shot that evaded South Korea’s goalkeeper, Woo Seo-Bin, and found the back of the net. Sabastine’s strike, which clipped the upright before crossing the line, sent the Nigerian bench into wild celebrations.
Despite a late push from South Korea, including a dangerous shot from Bae Ye-Bin that sailed just over the crossbar, the Falconets held firm. Osigwe nearly doubled Nigeria’s lead in stoppage time, cutting inside on her left foot but narrowly missing the target.

A Crucial Win
With this victory, Nigeria sits in a favorable position in their group. The win gives the Falconets three crucial points and sets them up for a potential early qualification to the knockout stages. However, they will face a more formidable challenge in their next match against three-time World Cup champions Germany, known for their tactical discipline and attacking prowess.
Looking Ahead: A Showdown with Germany
The Falconets’ next match against Germany on Wednesday evening at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo will be pivotal. A win against the European giants could secure Nigeria’s place in the Round of 16, while a loss would make their final group game a must-win encounter. Coach Danjuma will need to prepare his team for a stern test against a well-drilled German side with a rich competition history.
The Falconets have shown resilience and determination in their opening match, and they will be looking to build on this positive start as they continue their quest for glory at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. With the excitement building and the competition heating up, all eyes will be on the Falconets as they look to secure their place in the knockout rounds.
