Felabration 2024 Kicks Off with Climate Change Debate and Electrifying Performances

The 2024 edition of the Felabration Festival began with a stimulating debate on climate change, setting the tone for the annual celebration of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulakpo Kuti. Held at the NECA Hall in Ikeja, Lagos, the festival—known for its cultural, artistic, and intellectual diversity—this year adopts the theme “Look and Laugh,” inspired by Fela’s 1980 hit song.

The week-long festival, running from October 14 to 20, aims to honor Fela’s legacy while addressing critical societal issues. In this spirit, the Fela Debates featured prominent speakers Adewale Tinubu, Dele Faseemo, Titilayo Oshodi, and Desmond Majekodunmi, who tackled the pressing topic, “The Geopolitics of Africa and Climate Change.” Moderated by Laila Johnson-Salami, the debate provided an avenue for in-depth discussions on how Africa can navigate the global climate crisis.

In addition to the debate, pre-events such as an art competition, Afrobics dance showcase, and the Dress Fela Fashion Contest wrapped up, drawing participants from all over Nigeria and beyond. These events align with Fela’s ethos, fostering creativity and innovation across multiple disciplines.

Music and Entertainment Shine at the New Afrika Shrine

As the festivities moved to the New Afrika Shrine, musical performances took center stage. Stars like Skales, May D, and Durella gave electrifying performances, keeping the audience energized throughout the night. The concert, a mainstay of Felabration, showcased a fusion of Afrobeat, contemporary hits, and fan-favorite classics, adding to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.

Attendees, including first-time visitors, were excited and praised the performances. Some described the night as a “dream come true,” thrilled by the opportunity to see their favorite artists perform live. Others called it an “unforgettable experience,” with the performances and atmosphere leaving lasting impressions.
