Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition Produces One-Day Governor – Jemimah Marcus
Jemimah Marcus, a 16-year old student of Angus Memorial Senior High school, Shomolu, Lagos has emerged winner of the 2020 Lagos State Government new era spelling bee competition sponsored by Indomie Noodles. As the winner of the spelling bee competition, she also earned the title of one-day governor of the state along with a ₦250,000 cash prize.
Others recognized in the competition include Ajose Sotun of Topo Grammar School who emerged first-runner up, clinching a ₦150,000 cash prize and Edeh Rhema of Denton Junior Grammar School, Ebute-Metta who was recognized as the second-runner up with a ₦100,000 cash prize.
Also, the first lady of Lagos State, Mrs Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs Funsho Raji said that the annual competition is one of the initiatives designed by the government to promote academic excellence among learners in government primary and secondary schools in Lagos State.

Education is one of the key components of the THEMES Agenda (Traffic Management and Transportation; Health and Environment; Education and Technology; Making Lagos a 21st Century state; Security and Governance.) of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration. Upholding education in the state is targeted at promoting a greater Lagos. The government’s intention is to do its best to secure the future of children as tomorrow’s leaders.
The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo highlighted the need to embrace diligence in education. She further stated that records have shown that participants and winners of the past spelling bee competitions have continued to excel and distinguish themselves in their various universities, graduating with top grades.
The Lagos State government spelling bee competition shows that the state has fulfilled her promise of making the overall winner a one-day governor. So far, the competition has produced 18 one-day governors in the state.
