Lola Akinmade Åkerström
Lola Akinmade Åkerström is an award-winning writer and photographer. She has photographed and dispatched from over 70 countries for various publications. It is no wonder she received the 2018 Bill Muster Travel Photographer of the Year Award in recognition of excellence in photography. Lola Akinmade’s photography is represented by National Geographic Image Collection and Wonderful Machine.
Lola Akinmade received a master’s degree in Geography Information System (GIS) from the University of Maryland. She started her career as a field journalist at Eco-Challenge and worked for 12 years as a GIS developer before becoming a professional photographer.
Lola has contributed to several books. Additionally, she is the author of Due North, bestselling LAGOM: Swedish Secret of Living Well available in 18 foreign language editions and recently, In Every Mirror She is Black.
Lola’s work has appeared in several media outlets such as the National Geographic, BBC, CNN, The Guardian, Travel + Leisure, New York Times, Slate, Travel Channel, Adventure.com Magazine, The Sunday Times, AFAR, Lonely Planet, Fodor’s, several in-flight magazines, amongst others.
Lola serves as Editor-in-Chief of Slow Travel Stockholm – an editorial site that encourages travel to explore Stockholm deeper and slowly. She is also a founder of the NordicTB which provides digital marketing, content creation, and social media collaboration with travel brands and destinations.

Lola has collaborated with high profile commercial brands for various campaigns, promotions, or work assignments. Some of the brands Include Absolut Vodka, Marriott International, MasterCard, Mercedes Benz, Swedish Lapland, Channel, to name a few. She also owns and runs Geotraveler Media – a multimedia and travel consulting agency providing a spectrum of travel media-related services.
Lola has spoken at several travel conferences and events including the 2020 Skift Europe Forum, Wanderful Digital Summit, AudacityDigi Festival, Women in Travel CIC, National Geographic Traveller Masterclasses – London, UK, Royal Geographical Society – London, UK, 2019 TEDxStockholm – Stockholm, Sweden and lots more.
The writer has been recognized with multiple awards and nominations for her work, including a Pushcart Prize nomination, and was honoured with a MIPAD 100 (Most Influential People of African Descent) Award within media and culture in 2018.
She is based in Stockholm, Sweden and is available for both writing and photography assignments around the world.
