Nigerian Man Builds Solar Powered Tricycles
Solar energy uses captured sunlight to create photovoltaic power (PV) or concentrated solar power (CSP) for energy. This energy conversion allows solar to be used to power auto motives, lights, pools, heaters and gadgets. With the world changing rapidly, research is constantly being carried out on sustainable energy with petrol driven cars slowly giving way to electric cars. Electric cars are the future and these range of products would meet today’s demand of energy without putting them in danger of getting expired or depleted and can be used repeatedly.
Anthony Obinna Okafor is a graduate of Mechanical/Production Engineering from Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka, Anambra who has invented a solar-powered tricycle which was recently unveiled in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state.
The solar powered tricycle popularly called Keke in Nigeria took about 3 weeks to build. Anthony was able to build this tricycle with the help of Ebonyi State Vocational College. He mentioned that materials like the electric motor, axle and controllers with few other accessories were imported.
The tricycle works with solar panels and can charge itself. It could also be charged with the grid or with an external solar power supply. If fully charged the tricycle can go 60 to 70km and on a sunny day, extended by another 10km.

Although Anthony’s innovation hasn’t been given a name yet as he is still in the process of deciding a name, he currently calls the tricycle OKAFOR just like Ford, Toyota, Honda – alluding to his Nigerian descent and pride in his Nigerian identity.
Okafor tricycle is a laudable initiative as sustainable energy should be widely encouraged as it does not cause any harm to the environment and it is available free of cost. Using renewable energy will help you save money long term. Not only will you save on maintenance costs, but on operating costs as well. When you are using a technology that generates power from the sun, wind, steam, or natural processes, you don’t have to pay to refuel.
