Nnamdi Chukwuocha Wins Delaware State Assembly

Nigerian-American, Nnamdi Chukwuocha who has been a member of the Delaware House of Representatives, representing District 1 under the Democratic Party since January 8, 2019, has joined the list of successful Nigerian-Americans like Adeoye Owolewa and Esther Agbaje who emerged victorious in the recently concluded United States General Elections.

Nnamdi Chukwuocha was declared the winner of a seat in the Delaware State House of Representatives, following the results of the election held on the 3rd of November, 2020. He ran unopposed under the platform of the Democratic Party, winning 100% of the votes cast, which represents 7,640 votes. As a re-elected member of the Delaware State House of Representatives, his term will be due on November 8, 2022. 

Nnamdi had successful reelection to the Delaware House of Representatives to represent District 1 after the Democratic Party’s primary election for his office, scheduled to hold on September 15, 2020, was cancelled.

Nnamdi was first elected to the Delaware House of Representatives in 2018 after successfully defeating incumbent Charles Potter Jr. at the Democratic Party primary election.

Nnamdi’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in History and a master’s degree in Social Work from Delaware State University.

Nnamdi has over 30 years’ experience serving as a social worker. He is a proud US Army (Infantry) Veteran and was appointed Vice-Chair for the Veterans Affairs Committee.

As a member of the Delaware House of Representatives in 2019, Nnamdi was an integral member of several committees like the Corrections Committee, the Education Committee, the Health and Human Development Committee, the Veterans Affairs Committee and was Vice-Chairman of the Transportation/Land Use and Infrastructure Committee.

He has effectively utilized his experience as a Wilmington City Councilman, where he was elected President Pro-tempore and Vice-Chair for the Finance and Economic Development Committee, alongside being a Planning and Development Committee, to guide his progression to becoming State Representative for the First District.

As a state representative, Nnamdi has effectively tackled the issues confronting the first district and the only state of Delaware. He has sponsored legislation that has advanced education, criminal justice reforms, juvenile justice, professional regulations, seniors, veterans and also created the Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust within the Department of Justice.

Interestingly, Nnamdi is also a poet and mostly performs with his twin brother, Al as ‘the Twin Poets’ (TwinPoets.org). Their commitments to their work and words are deeply rooted in their efforts to leverage art as a tool to empower children and communities. For their notable works, the Twin Poets were appointed as Delaware State 17th Poets Laureate in 2015 and were awarded the American Poets Laureate Fellowship in 2020.

So far, a total of three Nigerian-Americans have won legislative seats in the U.S general elections, out of nine Nigerian-Americans that contested in the elections.
