Nollywood Superstar, Ini Edo Appointed as NDI’s Women Empowerment Ambassador
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) has announced popular Nollywood actress, Ini Edo, as its Women Empowerment Ambassador, to lead the advancement of gender equality and the SAGE initiative which is aimed at increasing women’s representation in public offices.
Under the SAGE initiative, NDI is working with prominent Nigerians and Nigerian-led organizations to foster women’s participation in politics. Through the SAGE initiative, NDI will advocate for constitutional reforms and political party policies limiting the equal participation of women in political offices.
Ini Edo’s appointment was inaugurated by Dr Steve Snook, Nigeria Country Director, NDI, on Friday, September 4, 2020. Speaking on her roles, Dr Steve Snook said that Ini Edo will drive awareness around the challenges faced by women which limit their chances and participation in democracy and electoral processes.
Speaking, Dr Steve Snook said,
“To comprehensively address the barrier to women’s equal participation, we need strong advocates who will not back down from the challenge. We are proud to welcome Ini Edo as an ambassador to our program, who will raise awareness and support women’s political participation across Nigeria.”
The new NDI ambassador, Ini Edo in her remarks stated that she will use her platform to influence policies that allow women to equally participate in politics and policymaking. Ini Edo will be supporting NDI as its ambassador to reach out to the government, conduct campaigns and provide sensitization programs for women to understand their value and importance in the society.
NDI, a non-governmental organization committed to supporting and strengthening democratic institutions globally through citizens’ participation, openness and accountability in government are confident that Ini Edo will be able to tackle challenges and influence policy changes in this regard.
The organization additionally revealed that it has gained the full support of the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, due to the declining opportunities provided for women to participate in Nigeria’s political and electoral spaces.
