NYSC Corp Members, Ogun State, and Bayero Universities Produce Sanitizers.

In a bid to flatten the Coviod-19 curve in Nigeria, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Oyo State Chapter recently announced that its members have started the mass production of sanitizers. This was done as part of their skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development which is a significant aspect of the NYSC.

This is highly commendable as there is an increase in the demand for innovation and entrepreneurship in Nigeria. Acquired skills and entrepreneurship development will create jobs which will invariably contribute to economic growth and development.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General, Shuaibu Ibrahim confirmed that the sanitizers would be distributed to hospitals and various communities in the state to prevent the increase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers help to deter the spread of germs, illness-causing bacteria and viruses.

Similarly, the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Bayero University, Kano, has commissioned its members to produce large quantities of sanitizers. The sanitizer will be utilized within the university campus and potentially extended beyond the campus. Several academic staff from the department volunteered to participate and the formulation of the sanitizers is currently ongoing based on the prescribed World Health Organization’s specifications.

The head, Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Dr. Ibrahim Tajo Siraj, who made the disclosure stated that the idea was informed by the desire to render a helping hand in the fight against the COVID-19 disease.

In Ogun State, the Head of Science Laboratory Technology Department, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Dr. Abidemi Taiwo has also produced sanitizers for the teaching and non-teaching staff of the school.

Dr. Abidemi Taiwo, who is also the vice-chairman of Women in Technical Education, MAPOLY chapter, indicated that she produced the sanitizers in order to make them available to the university community at a reduced cost.

Given all the great initiatives by Nigerians across medical, professional and educational terrains, it is certain that it is the trained individuals who develop the capacity and analytical skills that will drive local economies, support civil society, teach children, lead effective governments, and make important decisions that affect entire societies.
