In a significant announcement by the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) in collaboration with the Federal Sports Ministry, Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, has been named Nigeria’s flag-bearer for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics. The ceremony, set to take place on the River Seine on Friday, July 26, 2024, will mark the official start of the much-anticipated Games.

The announcement was confirmed in a statement released by Tony Nezianya, the press attaché for Team Nigeria. The statement also revealed that Anuoluwapo Opeyori of the badminton team had been appointed the general captain of Team Nigeria’s contingent for the Paris Games.

Earlier this year, she set a world-leading time of 12.40 seconds, narrowly edging out two-time world champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica, who finished with 12.46 seconds. Amusan’s impressive form and consistent performance have made her a symbol of national pride and a key figure to watch at the upcoming Olympics.

Anuoluwapo Opeyori, a seasoned badminton player, has represented Nigeria since 2017. The 26-year-old athlete won the African Championships and African Games in the singles event in 2019 and also competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. As the general team captain, Opeyori is expected to provide crucial leadership and guidance to the Nigerian contingent in Paris, leveraging his extensive international experience to inspire and motivate his teammates.
