Refinedng featured several inspiring stories this week, highlighting and sharing the achievements of trailblazers in Nigeria. Also included was the launch of a brilliant art innovation in the country. Abiola Fashina, a Medical Laboratory Scientist from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Medical Centre was recognized as ISN’s first Medical laboratory scientist of the year. In addition to his award, he received the sum of ₦1 million cash prize, a capacity development training and a fine donation of medical laboratory equipment. Likewise, Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi, Executive Director of Stand to End Rape (STER) initiative was named winner of the 2020 Global Citizen Prize: Nigeria’s Hero Award. Oluwaseun started her advocacy work while interning with the United Nations Headquarters in New York and Half the Sky Movement. Nigeria recorded another win on the continent as Kiki Mordi, an investigative journalist and media personality emerged winner of the 2020 Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling, for her Sex for Grades’ documentary which attracted worldwide attention and helped trigger further investigations into the Nigerian higher education system. Also, Talented Music Producer, Abisagboola Oluseun John, professionally known as Bankulli Osha was recognized at Grammys for his contribution to Beyonce’s The Lion King: The Gift album. Bankulli has a large portfolio of building and collaborating with several highly rated Nigerian and international musicians like Kanye West, Jayz, Wizkid and Davido. Also included is the award of ₦1 million prize to Oluwatobiloba Ajayi, founder of Let Cerebral Palsy Kids Learn Foundation. The prize was awarded by the Nigerian Prize for Difference and Diversity on the 10th of December, 2020; in honour of her support towards children living with cerebral palsy. Zainab Wakili shines the spotlight on her school as she became the winner of the Sheengineer Invent It, Build It students workshop/STEM competition Zainab hopes to be the first female engineer to design a machine that would aid the elderly. Nigeria recently witnessed advancement in arts and tourism as the first African art gallery/aggregator, Aworanka was launched in the country, with ten Nigerian galleries representing over two hundred and fifty artists.
