12 Nigerian Old Hits Worth Listening To
Nigerian songs have transcended time both locally and internationally. Asides from conveying strong emotions and reflecting cultural attitudes, they have also resonated with a large number of people in the country and across the African continent. While Nigerian music is currently making waves and topping charts in the international music landscape, we have decided to share 12 of our favourite old hits from some of our budding superstars, to keep you refreshed all weekend. Enjoy the uniqueness of these songs and appreciate Nigeria’s rich music history.
Gongo Aso – 9ice
Produced by ID Cabasa in 2008, “Gongo Aso” by the talented Nigerian musician 9ice became a national sensation. The instrumental of this classic song is one of the most famous in Nigeria’s rich music history. With a blend of street lingo and Yoruba proverbs, 9ice scored a home run with Gongo Aso.
African Queen – 2face Idibia
This 2004 evergreen track off 2face Idibia’s solo debut album Face 2 Face is one that rocked the airwaves for many years. Asides from being a household song, African Queen was an instant classic of Nigeria’s urban music generation and remains one of Nigeria’s greatest love songs.
Big Boy – ELDee ft. OluMaintain, Oladele & Banky W
“Big Boy” released in 2008 was sung by Eldee and featured Olu Maintain, Oladele and Banky W. This single topped several music chat shows such as Top 10 Naija and Soundcity. The Big Boy record was the fourth song off ELDee’s twelve tracked project Big Boy.
Eni Duro – Olamide Baddo
Released in 2011, “Eni Duro” is Olamide’s fourth single off his debut album Rapsodi. The album which featured a talented act was produced by ID Cabasa and later released under Coded Tunes. Eni Duro was a hit song that rocked the street, birthday parties and owambes back then. Following the success of the song, Olamide baddo won several awards. To date, the singer is still recognized among Nigerian artists impacting the country’s music industry. He has signed big artists such as Adekunle Gold, Fireboy DML, Lil Kesh amongst others.
We Are Africans (Naija Remix) – JJC ft. Femi Kuti, Dagrin, Eldee, DJ Zeez, Kel, Ay.com, Moe Money & Ragga Remi
“We Are Africans” by JJC featured some of the biggest talents from Nigeria like rapper elDee and Femi Kuti the oldest son of the legendary Fela Kuti. This Tune was released in 2010 on his debut album “United States of Africa”.
Kini Big Deal – NaetoC
“Kini Big Deal” by the award-winning artiste, Naetochukwu Chikwe aka Naeto C no doubt left a mark in the Nigerian music scene. The then newcomers’ 2008 debut album, U Know My P was acclaimed to have surpassed more limits than any up and coming artist, lyrically and production-wise at the time.

JOOOR (Rmx) – Jahbless Ft. IcePrince, Reminisce, Durella, Ruggedman & Eldee
This hot collaboration by Jah Bless and talented acts such as Ice Prince, Ruggedman, eLDee, Durella and Reminisce rocked the airwaves and youth expression In 2010. The lyrics were produced originally in the Yoruba language asides from Ice Prince’s part.
Holla At Your Boy – Wizkid
Afrobeat star Wizkid 2010 released the hit single “Holla At Your Boy”, off his Superstar album. The song was produced by DJ Klem (Knighthouse) and Vebee. Since receiving multiple recognition with the Superstar album, Wizkid has gone on to break ground in the international music space. He is the recipient of the 2021 Grammy Awards for Best Music Video (collaboration) “Brown Skin Girl” off Beyoncé’s “The Lion King: The Gift” album.
Ego – Djinee
Impressive Nigerian recording artist Djinee, released “Ego”, an Afro-RnB single back in 2006. The evergreen tune rocked many playlists and speakers throughout the year of release.
Molowo Noni – Samklef ft. Wizkid, D’Prince & Ice Prince
In 2011, award-winning music producer, Samklef pulled together a star-studded lineup for his song, Molowo Noni. In collaboration with Wizkid, D’Prince and Ice Prince, the music producer delivered this classic hit.
Pere – Mo Hits All-Stars
The song “Pere” is off the defunct Mo’Hits (Mavins record) 2007 album titled “Curriculum Vitae”. The hit track featured Don Jazzy, D’Banj and Wande Coal.
Oleku – Ice Prince ft. Brymo
The single “Oleku” by talented Nigerian artist Ice Prince Zamani and Brymo is the 9th track off the singer’s debut album Everybody Loves Ice Prince, released in 2011. The song was produced by Jesse Abaga. Ice Prince attracted numerous accolades following the impact of “Oleku” including topping the Nigerian music charts at the time.
