Adeola Olubamiji Rises as the First Black Director in the field of Additive Manufacturing, Canada

Dr Adeola Olubamiji, a 3D-printing expert and Founder of STEMHub Foundation has been appointed Director of Additive Manufacturing Solutions at Desktop Metal, a technology company in Massachusetts, United States that exists to make 3D printing accessible to all engineers, designers and manufacturers. On her appointment, she becomes the first black woman in the field of Additive Manufacturing (AM) to assume the role of Director.

The Nigerian-Canadian technologist has over 9 years’ experience in Additive Manufacturing spanning across Metal Binder Jetting, Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and Bioprinting. Her experience cuts across the Biomedical, Aerospace and Automotive industries.

Asides her recent groundbreaking achievement of becoming the first black director in her field, Adeola is also the first black person to bag a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Physics/Electronics from Olabisi Onabanjo University and a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Tampere University of Technology.

Adeola’s work surpasses the AM space. She is the Secretary of the Board of Health science and Innovation Inc. Indianapolis, Indiana and sits on the Advisory Board of AfricaHacks. By founding StemHub in 2017, a non-profit organisation preparing females and visible minorities with practical skills, Adeola alongside her intellectual team provide one-on-one mentoring required to increase proficiency in Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and also the strategies required to thrive in any STEM careers in Ontario, Canada and West Africa.

Also, through her consulting company, D-Tech Centric LLC, Adeola runs a career development mentorship program for professionals seeking career development, transitioning, relocation and graduate scholarships opportunities. With a strong online presence across major social platforms, she has been instrumental to the career advancement and development of many young Africans and others in search of greener pastures.

Adeola has worked as Advanced Manufacturing Technical Advisor at Cummins Inc, Indiana, United States and also as Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer between October 2018 – November 2020, leading and supporting the development of Design of Experiments (DoEs). At Cummins Inc, she developed an AM technology development roadmap and led its implementation. Adeola also improved the company’s laser-printed 316L stainless steel to a quality and unmatchable level. Additionally, she was Lead Metallurgist/Additive Manufacturing Engineer at Burloak Technologies Inc from September 2016 to September 2018, where she oversaw the material selection and nondestructive testing of metallic parts for verification of weld integrity.

Adeola’s various impactful academic contributions have resulted in over seven scholarly scientific publications and scientific conference presentations like TEDx talk and contributions on various high-profile scientific panels.

In recognition of her contributions to science, technology, engineering and the community, Adeola was named one of the 2020 RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award winners. She also won the 2020 Science Technology Engineering and Production (STEP) award by the Manufacturing Institute, USA; 2019 Influential Women in Manufacturing award by Putman Media and was Canada Honoree for the 2019 L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth. 

As she rises in her field, Adeola is setting the pace for others to follow, while also creating opportunities to that effect.

We congratulate Adeola Olubamiji for assuming the role of Director, Additive Manufacturing. She is a force to reckon with and we are rooting for her.
