The facility, officially inaugurated on Monday in Osogbo, was unveiled by former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, alongside Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and philanthropist Dr Folorunso Alakija, the university’s Chancellor. Designed as a full-scale teaching, research, and clinical institution, the hospital represents a strategic response to long-standing gaps in medical training, infrastructure, and healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

More than a physical structure, the hospital is positioned as a hub for discovery, learning, and practical medical innovation.

Speaking at the inauguration, Osinbajo described the hospital as occupying a “rare and vital space” within Nigeria’s healthcare ecosystem. According to him, the facility strengthens the connection between theory and practice by allowing students to acquire hands-on experience while contributing to ethical medical research.

He explained that students of medicine and allied health sciences would not only learn how to treat illnesses but also how to ask the right scientific questions and translate research findings into compassionate, effective healthcare.

By doing so, Osinbajo noted, the institution places Osun State, and Nigeria more broadly, on the map as a producer of medical knowledge rather than merely a consumer of healthcare services. In the wider West African context, he added, the hospital represents both promise and long-term potential.

Osinbajo also commended the Alakija family for choosing to invest in health education, describing the gesture as a legacy measured in lives saved, minds trained, and futures transformed.

Providing an overview of the hospital’s capabilities, UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye revealed that the facility houses 250 admission beds, 20 clinical departments, and five non-clinical departments.

The hospital features community health units, maternity and neonatal care services, digital research and diagnostic laboratories, and four fully equipped operating theatres. Advanced diagnostic imaging services, including CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray facilities—are also available.

In addition, the centre includes cardiac and ophthalmology theatres, digitised delivery rooms, neonatal intensive care units, dialysis centres, intensive care units, and a modern mortuary. According to Adebooye, many of these facilities remain rare even in some of Nigeria’s most established hospitals.

Governor Adeleke echoed this sentiment, describing the scale and quality of the infrastructure as “huge beyond valuation.” He acknowledged the difficulty governments face globally in funding education and healthcare effectively, noting that the donation sets a new benchmark for private-sector involvement in public health development.

A Vision Rooted in Sustainability and Impact

In her remarks, Dr Folorunso Alakija said the hospital was conceived not only to strengthen medical education but also to serve as a sustainable revenue source for the university. She highlighted Nigeria’s challenges with brain drain, shortages of skilled medical personnel, and deteriorating health infrastructure as key motivations behind the project.

According to her, the hospital stands as a beacon of hope and a bold step toward transforming healthcare delivery in Osun State, Nigeria, and across Africa. She also called on partners and stakeholders to support UNIOSUN’s long-term vision of building a resilient and globally competitive healthcare system.

A Defining Moment for Nigerian Healthcare Education

The handover of the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital marks a defining milestone for Osun State University and Nigeria’s medical education landscape. It reflects what is possible when philanthropy, vision, and institutional commitment align with national development goals.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with healthcare challenges, initiatives like this signal a future where local institutions can train world-class professionals, advance medical research, and deliver quality care at scale.
