To promote African stories and maintain its originality, three creatives from Nigeria and Uganda, Tolu Olowofoyeku, Hamid Ibrahim and Ziki Nelson created Kugali Media in 2017.
In 2020, Disney Animation Studios announced it’s collaboration with the all-African Studio – Kugali, to produce “Iwaju,” an animated sci-fi series.
“Iwaju”, which means “The Future” in Yoruba Language is set in Lagos State Nigeria. The sci-fi series explores deep themes of class, innocence, and challenging the status quo.
Written and directed by Kugali’s co-founder Ziki Nelson, “Iwaju” showcases a combination of Disney’s animation expertise and Kugali’s amazing storytelling authenticity.
“Iwaju” follows the story of Tola and Kole, who grew up on opposite sides of a city because of a difference in their social status. The friendship between the boys is tested by Bode, who is a tech pioneer with futuristic innovations.
The series will air exclusively on Disney Plus in 2023.
