Nigerian athletes astounded us with achievements of diverse proportions at the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event held every four years amongst athletes from the commonwealth nations. It was first held in 1930 and has since been a significant international sporting event.

The Commonwealth has a total of 23 sports and 7 para-sports for challenged athletes. The 2022 Commonwealth Games is the 22nd Commonwealth event held. It is known as the largest ever held, with 72 participating nations and ticket sales of 1.2 million.

Nigeria, being one of the participating nations came out as the top African nation on the medal table. It ranked at number seven (7) behind Scotland having 12 gold medals, 9 silver medals, and 14 bronze medals, with 35 medals in total.

Team Nigeria presented stellar results, especially as athletes broke world records. Not only did the record-breaking athletes attract attention at the event, but there was also an outpour of support and excitement from Nigerians at home after watching Tobi Amusan break a world record to win gold in the Women’s 100-meter hurdle. Ese Brume also came through with a gold medal in the women’s long jump.
