Emmys 2021: OT Fagbenle, Uzoamaka Aduba, Cynthia Erivo and Sophie Okonedo up for Awards

OT Fagbenle, Uzoamaka Aduba, Cynthia Erivo and Sophie Okonedo received nominations for different competitive categories as the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards were unveiled on Tuesday, the 13th of July 2021. 

The Nigerian stars were nominated in the drama and comedy categories including OT Fagbenle for his role in “The Handmaid’s Tale”, Uzo Aduba for “In Treatment”, Cynthia Erivo for her role “Genius: Aretha”, and Sophie Okonedo for her role in “Ratched”. 

Other African celebrities were not left out in the race. Rege-Jean Page, Bridgerton’s popular star is up for best lead actor in a drama, as is Sterling K Brown (This is Us), Billy Porter (Pose) and Matthew Rhys (Perry Manson). Michael Coel and Paapa Essiedu were nominated for their roles in “I May Destroy you”.

The Emmy Awards are considered the biggest US event of the year for TV. The ceremony will air live on Sunday, 19th of September at 8. P.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS and stream on Paramount +. 

“The Neighborhood” star, Cedric the Entertainer, will host the ceremony at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles featuring a limited audience of nominees and their guests.

 The Emmys are voted for by more than 25,000 members of the United States’ Television Academy which represents those in front and behind the small screen.

OT Fagbenle 

OT Fagbenle has appeared in several films, stage and television productions. He made history when he became the first person to write, direct, compose, star and produce the opening episode of a TV series on a major US network with his show “Maxxx”. In his career, he has been nominated and awarded for several roles including being a recipient of an Outstanding Achievement Award at the 13th African Film Awards.

Uzoamaka Aduba

Uzoamaka Aduba is known for her role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on the Netflix original series “Orange Is the New Black”, for which she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014, an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2015 and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series in 2014 and 2015.

Cynthia Erivo 

Cynthia Erivo is known for her “Broadway” debut. She is the recipient of several accolades including a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, a Tony Award and Daytime Emmy Award for her lead role in “The Colour Purple” as well as nominations for two Academy Awards.

Sophie Okonedo

Sophie Okonedo started her film career in the British drama “Young Soul Rebels” (1991) before appearing in other titles. Sophie’s breakthrough career came when she co-starred in the film “Hotel Rwanda” as Tatiana Rusesabagina. For this role, she became the second Black female Briton to receive a nomination at the 77th Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has received honours such as the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
