Fela Anikulapo-Kuti Nominated for 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced 16 nominees for its 2021 class of inductees, which includes Nigeria’s late Afrobeat originator and legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Others shortlisted include Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Kate Bush, Devo, Carole King, Chaka Khan, Rage Against the Machine, and Todd Rundgren.
Fans can vote for up to five nominees daily on the Rock Hall website – www.rockhall.com till the 30th of April 2021, while nominees with the highest votes will be announced in May 2021 and inducted at the 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio.
Eligibility criteria for acceptance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame require that an artist or band must have had a 25-year long commercial recording prior to nomination. If Fela wins, he will make history as the first Nigerian artist in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is a multi-instrumentalist, who through his music and human rights activism campaigned against corruption and injustice in Nigeria. At the height of his popularity, he was regarded as one of Africa’s most ‘challenging and charismatic music performers’. Fela was a musical and sociopolitical voice of international significance. With his nomination into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the legendary artist is set for another posthumous honour.
This year’s ballot list reflects the diversity and depth of the nominees and the music celebrated by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The nominees have no doubt left an unforgettable impact in the world and have influenced numerous artists that have followed their footsteps.
