by REFINEDNG

When it comes to the fight for women’s rights in Africa, few names stand as boldly as Jaha Dukureh. Born in The Gambia and subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM) at just a week old, Dukureh’s journey from survivor to activist is a compelling story of courage, resilience, and change.

Today, she leads the charge against FGM, child marriage, and forced marriage, advocating fiercely for African women and girls through her organization, Safe Hands for Girls, and her role as the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for Africa. Her influence spans continents, bringing global awareness to issues often hidden in the shadows.

Early Life and Challenges: A Journey Defined by Resilience

Jaha Dukureh’s life has been marked by struggles that began early on. Born in 1989 in The Gambia to a deeply traditional family, Dukureh underwent FGM when she was just over a week old. At age 15, she moved to the United States for an arranged marriage to a much older man, a union that exposed her to further trauma and the struggles of early womanhood. The pain of FGM, compounded by the challenges of child marriage, could have silenced her. However, Dukureh found strength in adversity.

Her journey continued with resilience; she divorced her first husband, found refuge with family, and continued her education, eventually earning degrees in business administration and nonprofit management. Dukureh’s resilience carried her through these challenges and led to her life’s work: supporting women and girls who had faced similar traumas.

In 2013, the same year she graduated from college, Dukureh founded Safe Hands for Girls, a nonprofit aimed at ending FGM and supporting survivors of child and forced marriages. The organization, a lifeline for African women and girls, offers crucial resources, including counseling, community support, and public awareness campaigns. Through Safe Hands for Girls, Dukureh’s voice began to echo worldwide, helping to dismantle centuries-old practices that infringed on women’s rights.

Dukureh’s activism gained traction, catching the attention of global leaders. Her petition on Change.org led to the Obama administration’s 2016 Summit to End FGM. This historic gathering shed light on FGM practices in the United States and spurred legal action to protect young girls from undergoing FGM abroad.

Global Recognition and Influence: From Nobel Nominee to UN Ambassador

Dukureh’s relentless pursuit of justice has earned her significant international acclaim. In 2016, she was named to Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, and in 2018, she was appointed the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for Africa. Through this role, she mobilizes young people and governments alike to advocate for laws protecting girls and women from FGM and child marriage.

Her work has earned her honors like the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal and a Nobel Peace Prize nomination, cementing her role as a leading figure in the global human rights movement.

Her activism has also resonated deeply within her community. In a touching personal victory, she convinced her father not to subject her young half-sister to FGM—a powerful testament to her influence even within traditional circles.

Political Aspirations: Running for President of The Gambia

In 2021, Dukureh took her activism into the political arena, announcing her candidacy for the Gambian presidency. Her campaign, though short-lived, was ambitious, focusing on women’s rights, youth empowerment, and systemic reforms to eliminate practices like FGM. Dukureh’s political aspirations reflect her vision for a future where young African girls can grow free from fear and be empowered to shape their destinies.

She often reminds us that we are just “one generation away from eradicating FGM,” a vision that keeps her driven in her advocacy. Through her organization, her position with UN Women, and her global influence, Dukureh continues to inspire hope that a world free from gender-based violence and oppression is within reach.

Jaha Dukureh is more than an activist; she is a movement. She is a testament to the resilience of African women, a powerful voice for those who cannot speak, and an enduring symbol of hope and strength. Her work has paved the way for a brighter future, encouraging a generation to believe that change is not only possible but inevitable.
