In Nigeria’s ever-growing entertainment industry, the Headies Awards remain one of the most prestigious awards in Nigeria that spotlights Nigerian music stars and upcoming acts. Much acclaimed as the biggest award show in Nigeria, the Headies celebrates both new, upcoming, and established music acts in the Nigerian music space. The award was established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry.

We know these interesting things about the Headies Awards and you should too

  • The Headies  was originally known as the Hip Hop World Awards
  • The first and second editions of the music show were held at the Muson Center in Onikan, Lagos in 2006 and 2007 respectively
  • Between 2010 and 2012, the awards were held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos
  • The icon of The Headies was created by Ayo Animashaun, the founder of the awards. It was drawn by Matthias Aragbada, while the  first Headies plaque was done by Jide Adewoye
  • In 2008, the plaque was recreated in the United Kingdom and was plated with 21-carat gold. 
  • As of 2018, The Headies was composed of 25 categories. It currently has about 32 categories including six newly added for the 2022 awards ceremony
  • The award show has been hosted by popular acts such as Darey Art Alade, Rita Dominic, Tiwa Savage, and Dr. Sid. Dakore Egbuson, D’banj, M.I,  Banky W, Falz, and Adesua amongst others
  • Recipients of the Headies awards Next Rated include Asa (2006), Overdose, (2007), Wande Coal (2008), Skuki (2009), Omawumi (2010), Wizkid (2011), Davido (2012), Sean Tizzle (2013), Patoranking (2014), Reekado Banks (2015), Mr. Eazi (2016) and more.

  • This year’s event, the 15th Headies is scheduled for the 4th of September, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia USA.
