“Omo Ghetto: The Saga” Wins Africa’s Highest-Grossing Film at the META Cinema Conference

Since the theatrical release of Funke Akindele’s comedy film “Omo Ghetto: The Saga in December 2020, multiple accolades have been celebrated. Apart from being a box office success, “Omo Ghetto: The Saga was one of the highest nominated movies at the 2021 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

At the recently concluded META Cinema Conference held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates; the family comedy clinched its first-ever international award for Africa’s Highest-Grossing Film of 2020/2021. The META award is sponsored by COMSCORE, an international box office data collation company, and official data partners of the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).

In January 2021, the film emerged as the highest-grossing Nollywood movie ever, with over ₦468 million in earnings. This achievement broke a four-year record formerly held by Kemi Adetiba’s 2016 comedy film “The Wedding Party.”

“Omo Ghetto: The Saga features several Nollywood stars and high-spirited musicians from the Nigerian music industry including Yemi Alade, Naira Marley, Funke Akindele-Bello, Nancy Isime, Eniola Badmus, Chioma Akpotha, Mercy Aigbe, Adebayo Salami, Bimbo Thomas, Tina Mba, Deyemi Okanlawon, Zubby Michael, Timini Egbuson, Alex Ekubo, to name a few.

A sequel to the 2010 “Omo Ghetto,” Omo Ghetto: The Saga follows the life of Shalewa, AKA Lefty (Funke Akindele-Bello). The comedy film saw Funke Akindele in the dual roles of Ayomide and Lefty. The film is co-directed by Funke Akindele and JJCSkillz.
