Popular Afro-pop singer, Yemi Alade has secured a new appointment with the United Nations. On the 23rd of September, the United Nations appointed Yemi Alade as Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), a UN organization focused on poverty alleviation and equality. Her appointment was made, following the approval of the UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner.

Achim Steiner, who welcomed Yemi Alade in a video shared on the UNDP’s official twitter page said,

“We can’t wait to hit the ground running with you, Yemi. We look forward to hearing and sharing the issues that you are passionate about – including women’s empowerment and tackling inequality.” 

Yemi Alade joins the UNDP during a milestone year that marks the UN’s 75th anniversary, and the launch of a decade of action for the world to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

In response to her appointment, the award-winning artist promised to lend her voice to the vulnerable, especially women. Yemi Alade expressed in her shared video on Instagram that the UNDP’s aim to end poverty and address all forms of gender inequality totally aligns with hers and she could not be happier to have been considered for this opportunity. She also mentioned that the opportunity will help her shine a spotlight on the adverse effect of the ravaging socio-economic instabilities. Speaking, Yemi Alade said,

“It is an honour to be named UN goodwill ambassador to the UNDP, an agency whose core mission completely aligns with mine to end poverty and to erase all forms of gender inequality. In this new role, I will be a champion flexed biceps for the sustainable development goals and will shine an electric bulb on the impacts of Covid-19 on the poorest and most vulnerable communities.”

The singer noted that she will drive her energy towards sustaining those most affected by the recent instability in the world. Most importantly, Yemi Alade intends to correct the issues surrounding gender inequality in Nigeria. Yemi Alade said,

“Women are among the 4 billion people who are trying to survive Covid-19 without any form of social protection.” 

The music superstar communicated via her twitter page that she cannot wait to lead the sustainable development goals of the UNDP and we are rooting for her. Hearty cheers to Yemi Alade as she joins a host of celebrities around the world to raise awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals and women empowerment.
