The United Kingdom and Nigeria benefit from strong and enduring ties as Commonwealth partners through shared history and most importantly, our people. Also, the USA extends warm wishes to Nigeria in a statement by the USA Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo. The statement read,
“On behalf of the United States Government and the American people, I extend best wishes to the people of Nigeria on the 60th anniversary of their independence. Our countries share important values and similar entrepreneurial spirit, and we congratulate the Nigerian people for your commitment to tackling corruption, strengthening democratic institutions and leveraging Nigerian entrepreneurship to promote economic recovery. We look forward to continuing working with a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria and to making progress in support of our shared values in the coming year. Once again, congratulations on 60 years of Nigerian Independence.”
Nigeria got her independence from Britain on October 1, 1960. It started out when Nigeria’s new white and green flag was hoisted officially for the first time, replacing Britain’s Union Jack on October 1, 1960. Afterwards, a representative of Queen Elizabeth II handed Nigeria’s constitution to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who became Nigeria’s first Prime Minister. Nigeria’s Independence came with so much celebration, hope, fulfilment and strategies on how to positively impact the Nation and make it a land flowing of milk and honey.
Our rich cultural heritage, traditions, beliefs and festivals continue to set us apart amongst other African countries, and Nigerians all over the world have always made us proud with their numerous achievements, innovations, honors and awards. As we look on the bright side of this great Nation, we are confident that Nigeria will continue to make a difference in Africa and the world.
Happy 60th Independence Anniversary to Nigeria.
