The LIGHT PhD Program 2021 for African PhD Students

About the Award: There are 5 PhD opportunities in the LIGHT PhD program for African PhD students. Each studentship will work on one of the following themes:
* Development of gender sensitive TB screening interventions for community settings in Uganda and Nigeria based at the Zankli Research Centre (ZRC) in Abuja, Nigeria.
* Research Uptake to maximize research impact at the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) in Nairobi, Kenya or Lilongwe, Malawi.
* Theory driven development of a contextualized and targeted active TB case finding for the youth in Kenya based at the Respiratory Society of Kenya (ReSoK) in Nairobi.
* Modelling interventions to improve engagement of young adults and men in tuberculosis active case finding in high HIV prevalence settings based at the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Trust (MLW) in Blantyre, Malawi.
* Evaluation of the feasibility, affordability, acceptability, and effectiveness of a gender transformative TB screening interventions in formal health systems in Uganda and Nigeria based at the Makerere Lung Institute (MLI) in Kampala, Uganda.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the 2021 LIGHT PhD program for African PhD students
* Applicants must hold a first class, or high upper second-class honors degree (or equivalent) in an area relevant to the available projects for the LIGHT Consortium PhD program.
* Please provide full details of any relevant academic qualifications that you hold and upload both award certificate and transcript. If you do not have a transcript, you should request this from the awarding institution.
Value of Award
Available funding will include program fees at the off-site student rate, contribution to research support costs and stipend. Stipends will be in alignment with the standard allocation made by each host institute.
Requirements
* Upload or submit all available academic qualification documentation. As a minimum you must have uploaded or submitted an award certificate for your highest level completed academic qualification.
* Upload an anonymized Curriculum Vitae.
* Upload a personal statement.
* Upload or arrange submission of at least one eligible reference. If we have not received a full reference by the deadline your application will not be considered. Adding details of a referee is not sufficient for the purposes of fulfilling this condition.
* Uploaded evidence that you meet LSTM’s English Language Requirements.
Shortlisting
Commencing 11th January 2021.
Complete, eligible applications will be subject to an initial review procedure overseen by the LIGHT leadership team. Successful applicants will be invited to interview shortly afterwards. Unsuccessful applicants will be informed of the outcome unfortunately feedback on your application is not available at this stage.
Interviews
Commencing 25th January 2021.
Applicants invited to interview will need to prepare a short presentation based on a related research topic that will be provided 10 days in advance. This will be followed by competency-based questions from a panel including all supervisors and senior program personnel. It is expected that interviews will last approximately one hour.

Notification date
Commencing 1st February 2021
Successful candidates will receive notification of the outcome of their application and will be asked to commit to join the program by 8th February 2021. Candidates that choose to join the program will then be guided through the PhD admission process with a proposed start date in early May 2021.
