Every culture in Nigeria is diverse, unique and interesting to both observers and enthusiasts within and out of the cultural geography. Amongst the numerous cultures in Nigeria, dance remains one of the most creative and enjoyable cultures to observe.

Dance is a natural way of expressing our inner emotions. From special occasions to rites, festivals and weddings, dance is an integral part of most African societies. Traditional dances usually vary in style, movement and rhythm based on the practice of the community concerned and the beliefs of the performers. One of Nigeria’s highly celebrated traditional dances is the Nkwa Umu Agbogho of Afikpo, Ebonyi State. On today’s Saturday small chops, we dive into the nature and aspect of this endearing maiden dance.

The Nkwa Umu Agbogho (Maiden Dance)

Nkwa Umu Agbogho, which translates to maiden dance is one of Nigeria’s notable cultural dances that has put Africa on a global map. The Nkwa Umu Agbogho dance is performed by a group of well-trained individuals, involving an extensive dance rehearsal before it is formally performed at events and exhibitions.

Nkwa Umu Agbogho was created in 1970 by Chief Vincent Omesi Nwachi. He also made the dance nationally and internationally recognized through his distinct patterns, qualities, expertise, hard work, and of course consistency. Chief Vincent Nwachi served as the leader, director, and producer of the dance. Through his versatility, he was able to introduce many suitable dance steps that blend into the rhythms of songs, leading to a cultural display of rhythmic movements that stir from emotions of passion, joy and fulfilment.

Nkwa Umu Agbogho dances are usually well-directed, rehearsed and orderly. The dance steps are a bit difficult for ordinary dancers, which explains the rigorous practice involved until perfection. The Nkwa Umu Agbogho troupe dance to the traditional songs written by a group of married women in the Afikpo language. This typically promotes their language and cultural heritage to Africa and the world.

Recognized for its unique exhibition, dancers mostly display original and laudable artistic skills to the cheer of the crowd. They are usually accompanied by professional singers and drummers who also exhibit great skills in their act. In Nkwa Umu Agbogho, practice revolves until perfect synchronization.

Following leads are important to the Nkwa Umu Agbogho dancers, not because they lack skills but because direction and rules are pertinent to every successful dance exhibition. An interesting aspect is the use of nonverbal communication during the performance. The leaders usually maintain eye contact which other performers interpret and execute immediately.

Since its inception, the group has won several awards as well as gained both national and international recognitions. The group won all Nigeria Festival of Arts and Culture in 1972 and Ebonyi State competition by the Radio Television and Theatre Art Workers Union (RATTAWU) of Nigeria in 2006 and 2010.
