Her new tenure will commence on September 1, 2025, following the conclusion of her first term. The process for her reappointment began on October 8, 2024, under the oversight of Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council. With no other candidates nominated by the November 8 deadline, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala emerged as the sole candidate. During a special General Council meeting on November 28-29, 2024, she presented her vision for the WTO’s future, followed by a Q&A session with members.

The General Council reached a consensus to reappoint her, highlighting her ability to lead amidst a rapidly evolving global trade landscape. Ambassador Ølberg praised her accomplishments:
