The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards came with all the glamour, viral red carpet moments, and blockbuster expectations Nollywood fans anticipated. Films like The Herd, Gingerrr, and To Kill A Monkey dominated conversations online long before the awards night began. Many arrived with strong fan bases, streaming buzz, and commercial success behind them.
But by the end of the ceremony in Lagos, one film walked away as the defining story of the night.
My Father’s Shadow, directed by Akinola Davies Jr., emerged as the biggest winner at AMVCA 2026, securing five major awards, including Best Movie. The film also won Best Director, Best Writing in a Movie, Best Score/Music, and Best Sound Design, placing it ahead of some of Nollywood’s biggest crowd favourites.
For many viewers, the sweep reflected a growing shift in Nollywood. Audiences are still embracing commercially successful films, but there is increasing recognition for emotionally layered storytelling, artistic direction, and technically polished productions.

A Personal Story Rooted in Nigerian History

Set during the tense political climate surrounding Nigeria’s 1993 election crisis, My Father’s Shadow follows two brothers navigating Lagos with their estranged father, Folarin, played by British-Nigerian actor Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù.
What begins as a simple father-and-son reunion slowly develops into a deeply emotional exploration of family, masculinity, grief, memory, and reconciliation. The film moves through crowded Lagos streets, military checkpoints, roadside food spots, and chaotic city scenes while revealing the emotional distance between a father trying to reconnect and children struggling to understand him.
Rather than treating the 1993 political crisis as background decoration, the film allows the uncertainty and tension of that era to shape every interaction and emotional moment. The result is a story that feels personal while also reflecting a significant chapter in Nigerian history.
The screenplay, written by Akinola Davies Jr. and Wale Davies, draws inspiration from their own childhood experiences after losing their father at a young age. That emotional honesty appears to have resonated strongly with audiences and award voters alike.
The film’s visual presentation also stood out throughout the awards season. Shot on 16mm film, My Father’s Shadow delivered a textured and nostalgic view of Lagos rarely seen in contemporary Nollywood productions. Its muted tones, careful framing, and haunting score helped create an atmosphere that stayed with viewers long after the credits rolled.

From Cannes Recognition to AMVCA Glory

Before dominating the AMVCA stage, My Father’s Shadow had already built an impressive international reputation.
In 2025, it became the first Nigerian film selected for the official lineup at the Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered in the Un Certain Regard section. The achievement marked a major milestone for Nigerian cinema and immediately drew global attention to the project.
The film later earned recognition at the BAFTA Awards, Gotham Independent Film Awards, British Independent Film Awards, and several international festivals. Akinola Davies Jr. received praise for his direction, while Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù’s performance as Folarin gained critical acclaim across multiple award platforms.

Its AMVCA success now cements the film’s place as one of the most important Nigerian productions of the past year.
More importantly, the victory signals Nollywood’s continued evolution. Nigerian filmmakers are increasingly creating stories that remain deeply local in identity while also speaking a cinematic language that resonates globally.
My Father’s Shadow did not rely on spectacle or internet hype to dominate the AMVCAs. Instead, it leaned into storytelling, emotional depth, and artistic execution, and that approach ended up defining the biggest night in African entertainment.
