Hollywood witnessed a historic moment at the 98th Academy Awards as Michael B. Jordan secured his first-ever Oscar, winning Best Actor for his performance in Sinners. The victory capped an intense awards season and confirmed Jordan’s evolution from blockbuster star to one of the most respected performers of his generation.
The 39-year-old actor earned the honour for portraying identical twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” and Elias “Stack” Moore in the supernatural drama directed by Ryan Coogler. His win makes him the sixth Black actor in history to receive the Academy’s top acting prize and the first performer to win the award for playing twin characters.
The film itself arrived at the ceremony as one of the night’s biggest contenders, earning an impressive 16 nominations and ultimately taking home multiple trophies across major categories.

A Breakthrough Oscar Moment for Michael B. Jordan

Jordan’s win marked a significant milestone in a career already filled with notable performances across film and television. When his name was announced at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the actor appeared visibly emotional before addressing the audience.
‘God is good. God is good’, he said as he began his acceptance speech, thanking his family and acknowledging the support he has received throughout his career.
Jordan also paid tribute to the legacy of Black actors who paved the way for his success, referencing figures such as Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith. Their victories in previous decades helped reshape opportunities for Black performers in Hollywood.
‘I stand here because of the people that came before me,’ Jordan told the audience. ‘Thank you to everyone who has supported my career and believed in me.’
The award also recognised his long-standing creative partnership with director Ryan Coogler. The pair have collaborated on several acclaimed films, including Fruitvale Station, Creed and Black Panther, with Sinners marking their fifth project together.
A Demanding Dual Performance in Sinners

In Sinners, Jordan takes on the complex task of portraying two brothers with sharply different personalities. Set in the American South during the early twentieth century, the story follows the twins as they return home after the First World War and attempt to build a new life by opening a juke joint. Their plans soon collide with a supernatural threat that begins terrorising the town.
Jordan approached the roles with meticulous preparation. Working closely with dialect coaches and movement specialists, he crafted subtle physical and emotional differences between the characters. Smoke, the older twin, moves deliberately and cautiously, while Stack carries a restless, energetic presence shaped by unresolved trauma.
The performance impressed critics throughout the awards season. Industry observers initially predicted the Best Actor prize would go to Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, but momentum shifted after Jordan secured a surprise win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier this March.
At the Oscars, Jordan ultimately triumphed over a highly competitive field that included Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon, and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent.

A Major Night for Sinners and its Creative Team
Beyond Jordan’s individual victory, Sinners enjoyed a strong showing across the ceremony. The film’s creative team received recognition in several technical categories, underscoring the project’s ambitious storytelling and visual style.
One of the evening’s most notable wins came when cinematographer, Autumn Durald Arkapaw, made history as the first woman and the first Black cinematographer to receive the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
The film’s combination of historical drama, horror and musical influences helped it become both a critical success and a commercial hit, grossing hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide. Its Oscar nominations and wins further cemented the project as one of the defining films of the year.
For Jordan, however, the night ultimately belonged to a single moment, the one where his name was called and he stepped on stage to collect the industry’s most prestigious acting prize.
With an Oscar now added to his résumé, the actor closed his speech with a promise to continue growing both personally and professionally. ‘I’ll keep stepping up and being the best version of myself that I can be,’ he said, a statement that reflects both the journey behind him and the expectations for what comes next.
