Nigerian author, poet and cultural entrepreneur, Lola Shoneyin, has added another remarkable milestone to her literary journey after being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (RSL), one of the world’s most respected literary institutions.

As part of the society’s long-standing tradition, each newly elected Fellow signs the official RSL roll book using a historic pen from the organisation’s permanent collection. Shoneyin chose to sign with the dip pen once owned by celebrated English novelist, George Eliot, describing the moment as one of her favourite highlights of the evening.

Reflecting on the recognition, she shared on Instagram that being elected a Fellow and participating in the historic induction ceremony made for “such a fantastic evening.”

From Baba Segi to Aké, Shoneyin’s Impact Goes Beyond Books

Shoneyin is internationally recognised for her bestselling debut novel, The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, which was longlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2011 and has since become one of Nigeria’s most widely read contemporary novels. The story continues to enjoy renewed attention ahead of its highly anticipated film adaptation, scheduled for release in cinemas later this year.

Beyond fiction, Shoneyin has played a transformative role in promoting African literature and creative expression. In 2013, she founded the Aké Arts and Book Festival, which has grown into one of Africa’s leading literary and cultural festivals, bringing together writers, artists, filmmakers and thinkers from across the continent and beyond.

She is also the founder of Ouida Books, a Lagos-based publishing house and bookstore dedicated to amplifying African voices and expanding access to quality literature.
