It’s official. Ololade Ayelabola has been confirmed as a Guinness World Record (GWR) holder for the longest distance walked on a catwalk by a model. The record-keeping body has officially verified her achievement, solidifying her place in history as a trailblazer in both fashion and endurance.

The Nigerian model and Computer Science graduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) accomplished this extraordinary feat in October 2024. She walked an impressive 125.11 km (77.74 miles) over four days at the UNILAG Indoor Sports Centre. This journey, which involved 2,058 laps, surpassed her initial target of 120 km and shattered a record that had remained unbroken for 41 years.

Breaking a 41-Year-Old Record

Before Ololade’s historic achievement, the record for the longest distance walked on a catwalk by a model was held by Irish models Roberta Brown and Lorraine McCourt, who walked 114.4 km (71.1 miles) in 1983. With remarkable perseverance and determination, Ololade exceeded their record, demonstrating incredible stamina, mental strength, and a deep passion for modeling.

More Than a Record—A Statement for Inclusivity

For Ololade, this achievement was about more than setting a new world record. It was about challenging the norms of the fashion industry. Having faced rejection from fashion shows due to her height, she sought to break stereotypes and advocate for greater inclusivity in modeling.

“I didn’t do this for myself alone, but for the many models who have been limited by stereotypes and rigid beauty standards. I want the world to know that modeling is for everyone, regardless of size, height, or background,” she previously stated.

Throughout her record-breaking walk, Ololade showcased designs from several Nigerian designers. She used her journey as a platform to highlight African creativity and fashion. She walked in various outfits, from casual to traditional attire, reinforcing her belief that fashion should be diverse and represent different identities.

Support from UNILAG and the Fashion Community

Ololade’s journey was widely celebrated across Nigeria. Many students, fellow models, and well-wishers showed up at the UNILAG Indoor Sports Centre to cheer her on. Social media buzzed with support as fans followed her progress, inspired by her resilience and vision.

The confirmation from Guinness World Records has now sparked even greater excitement, with many hailing her as a pioneer and a role model for young Nigerians seeking to challenge industry limitations and pursue their dreams fearlessly.
