Innovation on Water: A Milestone for Lagos
The E1 Championship is a cutting-edge sporting series featuring RaceBirds, sleek, hydrofoil-powered boats capable of reaching speeds of over 90km/h. All fully electric and emission-free. The competition aims to promote clean energy, sustainable marine technology, and gender inclusion, with each team fielding both male and female pilots.
For Lagos, the race is more than a sporting spectacle. It’s a statement about innovation, climate consciousness, and Nigeria’s readiness to embrace the green economy.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the event as a “watershed moment” for Africa’s most populous city.
“By joining cities like Monaco, London, and Venice on the E1 calendar, Lagos has once again shown that we are bold, resilient, and ready to take our place on the global stage,” the governor said.
“This is about clean energy, innovation, and creating opportunities for our young people through technology and sports.”
Sanwo-Olu also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his goodwill message and for reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to sustainability and the blue economy. It is a development model that prioritizes the responsible use of ocean resources for economic growth.
Global Icons, Local Excitement

The Lagos leg of the E1 Series has drawn over 300 international participants from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The teams — backed by global celebrities including LeBron James, Rafael Nadal, Steve Aoki, Didier Drogba, Tom Brady, and Marc Anthony — are competing to be crowned the ultimate “Champions of the Water.”
Each team represents a blend of sport, sustainability, and star power. Beyond the competition, the event has become a cultural celebration of diversity, innovation, and environmental advocacy.
Speaking ahead of the race, Gbenga Omotosho, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, said the championship aligns perfectly with the city’s identity as a hub of creativity and commerce.
“This sport is not just about racing. It’s about Lagos joining the global conversation on sustainability, low emissions, and innovation,” Omotosho said.“Already, hotels around Victoria Island are fully booked. This shows how sports can open up the economy and project Lagos as a model megacity.”

Transforming the Lagos Economy
The impact of the E1 Grand Prix extends beyond the water. The influx of visitors, investors, and international media has provided a boost to tourism, hospitality, and local businesses. Restaurants, hotels, and transport operators across Victoria Island and Lekki report heightened activity.
The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and private partners, has made extensive arrangements to ensure smooth logistics and traffic flow around the venue.
According to Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transportation, road diversions around the Lekki–Victoria Island corridor will be managed strategically to ease congestion, with alternative routes clearly mapped out and LASTMA officials on duty throughout the event.
Designated parking spaces have been provided at the Nigerian Law School, Access Bank, and Fidelity Bank premises in Victoria Island.
“We are ensuring minimal disruption while providing an unforgettable experience for spectators and residents,” Osiyemi said. “It’s a proud moment for Lagos — the world will be watching.”
A Race Beyond Speed

More than just a competition, the E1 Lagos Grand Prix symbolizes a fusion of technology, sustainability, and sport. Each team’s participation reinforces the message that clean energy and entertainment can coexist, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional motor sports.
The Lagos event will also feature youth engagement initiatives, exhibitions on electric mobility, and marine innovation showcases designed to inspire the next generation of Nigerian engineers and athletes.
As Lagos takes its place alongside world capitals of innovation, the E1 race stands as a testament to the city’s relentless drive for progress. It is also a signal to the world that Africa’s largest city is ready for the future.
