Martha Jesuleke: From Biology Teacher to Sustainability Advocate

When many people think about a Biology class, they imagine diagrams on a chalkboard, textbook definitions, and students memorising scientific terms for examinations. Martha Toluwalope Jesuleke sees something entirely different.

An award-winning Nigerian educator, psychologist, certified child protection officer, and sustainability advocate, Martha has spent more than a decade helping students discover what they can achieve when learning connects to the real world. As an Assistant Chief Education Officer and Biology teacher at Obele Community Senior High School in Surulere, Lagos, she has built a reputation for transforming science education through innovation, technology, and mentorship.

Her work demonstrates a simple but powerful belief: education works best when it equips students not only to pass examinations but also to improve their communities.

Bringing Biology to Life Through Innovation

Teaching Biology presents a unique challenge. Many of the concepts students need to understand are invisible to the naked eye. Cells, microorganisms, genetic processes, and anatomical systems often exist only as diagrams in textbooks.

Rather than allowing those concepts to remain abstract, Martha uses technology to make them tangible. Through virtual laboratories, digital learning tools, and 3D biological simulations, she helps students see what traditional classroom resources often cannot fully demonstrate.

Her approach has changed the learning experience for many students. Instead of simply listening to lessons, they actively explore scientific concepts through interactive platforms that encourage curiosity and critical thinking. This blend of traditional teaching and educational technology has earned her recognition as a leading educator and an EdTech Peer Learning Pioneer through initiatives supported by Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB).

She has also trained fellow Biology teachers within her district, helping them adopt similar tools and approaches. As more educators embrace technology-driven learning, the benefits reach far beyond a single school.

Raising Environmental Stewards, Not Just Students

While science education remains central to her work, Martha also understands that today’s students will inherit some of the world’s biggest environmental challenges.

That understanding drives her commitment to climate and sustainability education. As a certified Global Schools Advocate and Eco Schools Nigeria Ambassador, she integrates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into her teaching, helping students connect classroom lessons to issues affecting their communities.

One of her most notable initiatives is Green World Resolution, a programme that encourages young people to view environmental challenges as opportunities for innovation. Through the initiative, students learn how to transform plastic waste into useful products while promoting cleaner and healthier communities.

The project teaches practical environmental responsibility, but it also develops leadership, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking. Students learn that they can play an active role in solving problems around them rather than waiting for others to act.

Championing Student Well-Being and Emotional Growth

Academic success is important, but Martha believes students thrive when their emotional well-being receives equal attention.

As a leading Social and Emotional Learning Ambassador with the MarkWillows Foundation, she trains educators on how emotional intelligence, empathy, and student well-being can improve learning outcomes. Her work helps teachers create environments where students feel supported, confident, and motivated to succeed.

Over the years, she has mentored and counselled more than a thousand young people, helping them navigate academic, personal, and social challenges. Her background in psychology strengthens her ability to connect with learners and understand the factors that influence their growth.

Building the Future Through Education

Martha’s contributions have earned recognition from educational institutions, corporate organisations, and innovation ecosystems. She was named First Runner-Up for Best Teacher in Lagos State Education District IV and also secured First Runner-Up in Wema Bank’s ‘My Teacher, My Hero’ Challenge.

Yet awards tell only part of the story.

Perhaps her greatest achievement lies in the thousands of students and educators she has influenced through teaching, mentorship, sustainability advocacy, and leadership development. Through initiatives such as The Jesuleke Limited, she has also trained teachers and learners on digital literacy, online safety, instructional leadership, and emerging educational trends.

At a time when the future demands adaptable thinkers and responsible citizens, Martha Jesuleke continues to demonstrate what education can achieve when innovation, compassion, and purpose come together.
